Understanding the Foundations of Feng Shui

Average reading time is 3 minutes.

Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice, is about creating harmony between individuals and their environment. The key principles involve the arrangement and orientation of space to enhance the flow of energy, or chi. In addition, feng shui divides the world into five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The elements represent physical substances, but also the symbolic qualities that each element brings to human life. In addition, each evokes a different mood. Together they create a balanced space that is soothing and creates a feeling of harmony and wellbeing.

  1. Wood: Represents growth and vitality. Use wooden furniture, green colors, and plants.

  2. Fire: Symbolizes passion and energy. Incorporate candles, red colors, and triangular shapes.

  3. Earth: Stands for stability and nourishment. Use ceramics, yellow or brown tones, and square shapes.

  4. Metal: Represents clarity and precision. Use metal objects, white or gray colors, and round shapes.

  5. Water: Symbolizes flow and abundance. Incorporate fountains, blue or black colors, and wavy shapes.

Central to feng shui is the Bagua map, an energy map used to analyze the spatial aspects of a room. Each section of the Bagua corresponds to various aspects of life, such as wealth, health, and relationships.

  • Wealth & Prosperity (Southeast): Enhance with lush plants and purple hues.

  • Fame & Reputation (South): Use red colors and fame-related symbols.

  • Love & Relationships (Southwest): Incorporate pairs of objects and romantic decor.

  • Family & Health (East): Use wooden elements and family photos.

  • Health (Center): Keep this area open and clutter-free.

  • Children & Creativity (West): Enhance with metal objects and creative symbols.

  • Knowledge & Self-Cultivation (Northeast): Use books and calming colors.

  • Career (North): Incorporate water elements and black or dark blue hues.

  • Helpful People & Travel (Northwest): Use metal objects and travel-related items.

While we may not be able to incorporate all the fundamentals of feng shui into our modern homes, understanding the basics helps you create a balanced, harmonious living space that supports your wellbeing. Each month this year, we will explore an aspect of feng shui and how to apply feng shui principles to your home and living spaces. We look forward to sharing more on feng shui with you.
